Boys Basketball Downs Moeller for District Title

Warrior Boys Basketball took on a perennial power in the Moeller Crusaders on Saturday at the Cintas Center for a District Championship.

After going back and forth all game, Moeller held possession of the ball in the waning seconds of regulation but the Warrior defense swarmed and freshman Jayden Davis couldn't convert on a layup - bringing the game to overtime.

The Warriors jumped out to an early lead, scoring the first four points in the overtime period. Moeller game storming back, ultimately getting a steal for a layup to take a 49-48 lead with just 16 seconds remaining.

Coming out of a time out, the Wayne offense stayed even keel as Isaiah Thompson penetrated the lane and found Alphonso Ward II at the basket for an easy deuce with two seconds remaining. After a timeout of their own, the Crusaders had one more look at the basket - a full court heave to center Danny Kelly that yielded a good look at the game winner but it was Kaden Post who came up with the critical shot contest and the Warriors escaped with a 50-49 overtime victory.

Senior Sean Heisle led the offensive attack that saw three Warriors score in double digits, scoring 13 points (all in the first half) including three timely threes to help Wayne stay afloat. Seniors Kaden Post and Alphonso Ward II finished with 11 points a piece. Senior Isaiah Thompson, the team's leading scorer and District 15 Player of the Year, finished with just six points but also added seven assists - including the game winner to Ward.

The district title is the seventh in program history and their first since 2022. The Warriors advance to the OHSAA Division I Regional Semifinals at 6:00 pm at the Cintas Center on March 11th where they will face a talented Princeton squad fresh off a 64-49 drubbing of Hamilton.
