After an extensive interview process, Wayne Athletics is excited to announce that Matt Gentry has been offered and accepted the position as the new head baseball coach. He will be the recommended candidate for the position, pending board approval.
Following the resignation of previous coach, Greg Tomlinson, Coach Gentry comes to Wayne High School baseball after serving as the Valley View High School head baseball coach from 2019-2024. Under his direction, the Spartans won a league championship, competed for a district title and sent numerous athletes to play baseball at the collegiate level.
Prior to coaching at Valley View, Gentry worked as an assistant at several GWOC schools including Springboro and Centerville High Schools, as well as one year with Waynesville High School.
On top of coaching high school baseball, he has coached summer baseball with programs including the Gem City Throwbacks, Dayton Dodgers and Home Field Elite. Coach Gentry credits his success to having worked under great head coaches which include OHSBCA hall of famers Tim Engleka and Mark Pelfrey, MVBCA hall of famer Terry Dickten, Centerville head coach Jason Whited and former Waynesville and Fairfield Head Coach Tommy Begley.
"I’m extremely excited about the opportunity to be a part of the rich tradition of Wayne athletics," remarked Gentry. "More so, I am humbled and blessed to become a positive influence in the lives of our student athletes. The passion for Wayne baseball will be visible through the actions and effort of our staff, student athletes and program supporters."
Gentry currently resides in Germantown with his wife Angi and has two sons, Brady and Nolan.
