Wayne Dominates Relays, Claims Multiple Titles at Beach Run Invitational

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — Competing against a deep field of national talent, Wayne High School delivered an impressive showing at the 2026 Beach Run Invitational, highlighted by multiple relay victories and a strong overall team performance, with the Boys team taking home the victory and the “Surfboard” Trophy.

Wayne’s biggest impact came in the relay events, where the program showcased both elite speed and depth.

The boys sprint relay squad captured a major win in the 4x200-meter relay, as Keng Martin, Key’shawn Garrett, Ryder Penrod, and Semarion Sroufe combined for a meet-winning time of 1:26.70, securing first place. 

Wayne continued its relay dominance in the Sprint Medley Relay (SMR) Junior/Senior division, where Keng Martin, Semarion Sroufe, Key’shawn Garrett, and Derrick Stinnett ran 1:32.81 to earn another first-place finish. 

The younger group followed suit, as the freshman/sophomore boys SMR team of Josiah Hunter, David Hunt Jr., Michael Fleetwood, and James Dyer also claimed gold with a time of 1:38.70. 

Distance relays added to Wayne’s success. The boys freshman/sophomore distance medley relay (DMR) team of Felipe Serrano, Tremaine Chappell, Kevin Harris III, and Mason Calhoun took first place in 11:58.20. 

On the girls side, Wayne secured another victory in the freshman/sophomore 4x800 relay, where Nawfel Moustapha, Ciomara Perez, Payton Miller, and Grace Manley finished first with a time of 11:29.33. 

Wayne also added key scoring performances in other relay events. The mixed 4x400 relay (freshman/sophomore) team of Rodney Brown, Dezirae Thomas, David Hunt Jr., and Nawfel Moustapha placed third, while the girls freshman/sophomore DMR team of Ciomara Perez, Grace Manley, Payton Miller, and Dezirae Thomas finished fourth.
 
Individually on the Boys side, Wayne was led by senior Key’Shawn Garrett who won the 200m Dash with a state of Ohio leading time of 21.13.  Garrett also finished second in the triple jump with a personal best jump of 47’ 9”.  Keng Martin, a junior, also recorded a state leading time while placing 2nd in the 110m Hurdles with a 14.01.  Sophomore Grayson Merris cleared 12’ 11.5” to take the silver medal in the Pole Vault  In the 3200m Run, sophomore Mason Calhoun (10:08.95) ran an impressive 20 second PR to place 7th overall.

On the girls side, sophomore Ma’khayla Bass placed sixth in the 400m Dash with a time of 57.66.  Senior Lily Cornelius cleared 9’ 0.25” to place 6th in the Pole Vault. Sophomore Trinity Perkins placed 7th with a time of 15.52 in the 100m Hurdles.  In the girls Discus throw, sophomore Makenna Pride threw 100’ 3.75” to place 7th.

Final Takeaway

Wayne emerged as one of the top-performing programs at the meet, particularly in relays, where they consistently outperformed strong regional and national competition. The combination of experienced upperclassmen and talented underclassmen proved to be a winning formula, as Wayne not only collected multiple titles but also demonstrated impressive depth across age groups.

With several relay squads already performing at a high level early in the season, Wayne appears poised to be a serious contender in upcoming championship meets.

The program is back at home tonight, April 7th, when they host the Warrior Relays at Wayne High School at 4:00 pm.
