Northmont took the opening kickoff and marched down the field for a field goal as they had an upset on their mind, Friday night in taking a 3-0 lead early.
After a failed onside kick set Wayne up with good field position, the Warriors notched a field goal to tie it, recovered the ensuing onside kick, and didn't look back on their way to a 45-6 victory over the Thunderbolts.
After an 11-3 first quarter, the Warriors scored 18 second quarter points to open the game wide open into a 29-6 halftime lead. Northmont kicked a field goal to make the score 11-6 but Wayne quickly responded with a long touchdown drive that was capped off by a one yard Isaiah Thompson touchdown run.
Sitting at 19-6 for much of the second quarter, the Warriors scored 10 points in the final 3:16 of the second quarter including a 34 yard Jayden Heinrich field goal (3:16) and a 47 yard strike from Kye Graham to Jamier Averette-Brown (1:53).
Sean Heisle added an interception late in the second, putting his total to a league leading three interceptions on the year. The defense was swarming all night long as they recovered three Northmont fumbles, including one from Heisle, Braxton Kee, and Kory Minor.
Offensively, Kye Graham had another impressive outing as he threw for 204 yards, three touchdowns, and an interception. He also led the Warrior ground attack, running for 113 yards and another score. Jamier Averette-Brown led the receiving core again with four catches for 88 yards and a touchdown. Isaiah Thompson put out another strong all-around game going for 97 all purpose yards (53 rushing, 44 receiving) and two scores (one rushing, one receiving).
Junior kicker Jayden Heinrich was perfect on the night, going 2-2 on FG and 1-1 on XP - his first multi-field goal game of his career.
Wayne sits at 4-2 on the year and 3-0 in GWOC play. They welcome the league's only other undefeated team, Springfield, to campus on Friday in a showdown for a stronghold on the GWOC. The game is currently scheduled for 7:00 pm at Heidkamp Stadium.
